I bought this girl an 8gig usb, she wanted to copy the clips from her camera to the usb to play on her dvd player and they didnt work, only certain file formats work on dvd players. I have no idea what compatibility the ps2 dvd rom uses.
dvd players are dvd players whether they called dvd players or whether they located in gaming consoles?
*.avi is popular, no idea why it doesnt work. I am sorry for not being able to help you.

ok... So... enough of the bullshit... basically... your AVI format is fine, but your Codec used to compress the Video footage is not compatible with the Playstation... so it cant read the files... does it come up with an error saying file corrupt, or does it just not show the files?
If it comes up with the files but you cant play them then you need a converter, i use AlltoAVI to change the codecs of my AVI's for my PS3... i just convert them to DivX 5.0 and they work... the file remains an AVI though...

Try putting one of the Vids on a USB stick... I know with my PS3 i can connect my iPod, maybe the PS2 is not compatible?
Dont know if this is an option, but with my PS3 it picks up the iPod, but to get the stuff off it i had to push Triangle and say Display/View all files, then all my stuff became available...
But if it doesn't come up with the iPod in the menu then it might not be compatible...

Afaik you cant connect external storage devices to a ps2 and read them. I think the usb ports are just there for things like the ps2 keyboard and things like singstar microphones etc.

Just because there are USB ports doesn't mean that there is software on the PS2 to read stuff on the USB ports... As someone said, the USB ports are there for input devices like the eyetoy, steering wheels and the singstar microphones.
Analogically speaking, your question is similar to asking why software that you have on your flash disk doesn't install on your PVR when you plug it into those USB ports on the PVR...
